The unauthorised sale of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) apparel and equipment is an offence, but these items are still openly sold on China's popular Taobao e-commerce website.
Such online competition, coupled with an impending lease expiry, have added to the woes of vendors at the Beach Road army market. On Taobao, items such as uniforms, kneepads, elbow guards, water pouches, boots and even berets can be found.
The army's chief supply officer, Colonel Keith Ho, said: "We wish to stress that the unauthorised sale of SAF equipment by servicemen and contracted suppliers is prohibited and we take a serious view on this matter." He added: "We advise servicemen to procure their personal equipment from authorised sources like the SAF eMart or from the official online eMart website, which can be found on the NS portal."
The unauthorised sale of SAF gear is an offence under military law. Those guilty of misappropriation or theft of SAF property can be jailed for up to three years.
In 1997, the armed forces introduced the SAF eMart, in which personnel are given credits to buy equipment online or at eMart outlets. But the unauthorised sale of SAF equipment online has still been reported. In 2010, for example, army-issued helmets were put up for sale on online forums HardwareZone and Gumtree.
DWINDLING CROWDS
It's very quiet now. People prefer to go online. There used to be a lot of people here on weekends in the past.
SHOP OWNER JEFFREY YAP
Meanwhile, the availability of army items online has affected the business of the Beach Road army market located on the second storey of the 38-year-old Golden Mile Food Centre. In 2012, freesheet My Paper reported that more than 10 vendors were hawking cotton T-shirts or singlets with the SAF logo on Taobao.
Only a handful of the shops there still sell army gear. Most of the owners of these shops are in their 60s and 70s. Other shops have turned to selling outdoor gear and camping equipment.
Most of the shops selling authorised army gear were sold under the Government's Stall Ownership Scheme in 1996 for about $60,000 per unit. When the stalls' 20-year leases expire in December, they will be returned to the Government and stallholders will become tenants.
Businesses said profits have halved compared with five years ago. Shop owner Jeffrey Yap said: "It's very quiet now. People prefer to go online.
"There used to be a lot of people here on weekends in the past."
The 65-year-old opened his shop 20 years ago, but stopped selling military gear about three years back. "I now focus on backpacks, camping equipment, deck chairs and water bottles," he said.
A 75-year-old shop owner, who gave her name only as Madam Liew, said in Malay: "There used to be a lot of people here but business now is difficult." Her 30-year-old shop has T-shirts, socks, backpacks and "a little bit of everything", including glow sticks.
Mr Lim Gin Peng, 75, who has been selling army gear for 25 years, has also been hit by online competition. He said: "People want things cheap and compare them to eMart prices. But I need to profit also."
never been to beach road for quite some time but i think their biz has been adversely affected by the e-mart. they may have to rebrand themselves now.

Pes C modified BMT is 4 weeks in tekong right? If due to an illness a specialist gave me 2 weeks mc, and I miss 2 weeks worth of training, will I have to recourse even though it's a valid medical reason?
to OP, it depends on what u missed during the 2 weeks. certain events like field camp, sit test, range shooting and 24k route march are compulsory to pass BMT. if they can be rearranged (usually means that you will be attached out to another company) you may still pass, else you will not clear your BMT. i don't think you will recourse. most likely, u'll just be posted to an admin or logistics position

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mavis Chionh for the City Harvest Church corruption trial charged that the founder of City Harvest Church, Kong Hee, and his fellow senior pastor that the men are liars and men without credibility yesterday (Sep 14).
During the closing submissions in Court, the DPP told the court to reject Kong Hee’s testimony by calling him a “well-practised liar” and having “utter lack of credibility”. Kong Hee claimed that he had been acting on advice of his lawyers and auditors, and distant himself from the sham bonds which were used to fund his wife’s doomed music career.
“Far from being a mere figurehead… (Kong Hee) was a meticulous and details-oriented leader whose express approval was needed before the bonds could go ahead”
The DPP later attacked Kong Hee’s second-in-command senior pastor Tan Ye Peng for being a puppet to Kong Hee. DPP Mavis continued to attack former finance manager Sharon Tan as the accused had deceived auditors by altering board meeting minutes.
“The defence’s claim that this was a mere failure of corporate governance arising from ignorance…was absurd, given the sophistication and scale of the church’s operations. CHC was not some struggling new voluntary outfit run by bumbling amateurs with no experience of the financial world.”
DPP Mavis also attacked John Lam who was both the investment committee member and a church board member, for covering up the sham bonds.
Serina Wee was not spared from DPP Mavis’s attack:
“(Serina Wee) was arguably the most inextricably involved in all the sham bond and the round-tripping transactions because of the nature of her role as the Crossover administrator.”
PAP MP Edwin Tong and also the lawyer for Kong Hee claimed that every single cent drawn from the bond went into the Crossover project and that Kong Hee and his fellow accused did not make a personal gain. However Edwin Tong did not point out that the one person making all the personal gains is Sun Ho, the wife of Kong Hee.

I'm looking for full time job but I only have a lower secondary cert and online job usually state that need at least a n or o level do anyone have job to introduce
Hello everyone, in my local playground there is a badminton court and every single night there would be a large group of malay teenagers playing that wooden ball kicking sport, and it's horrendously noisy. They would shout and laugh like some maniac every 5 minutes, and it's driving my family crazy. They have been doing this for years, and I just don't know what I can do to stop this. I have tried calling the police several times, but they(the police) either don't show up, or the group will come back the next day. I have even used the SPF's e-services to complain about this problem twice, but I have never gotten one reply from them. Aside from getting help from the police(which I have clearly given up on), what can I do to stop them?
oh dear if it was me i would get so annoyed that i would go down to scream at them :( not v useful i guess :/
I have social anxiety, and I tried studying for diploma twice, but I ended up dropping out both times because I just couldn't cope with all those group projects.
Anyway, I only have O'level cert at the moment. How do I further my studies? I need a study environment where there isn't group projects. Where should I go next?
I actually have a few options in mind:
Option 1: Doing A levels as a private candidate. They actually have smaller classes over there, and they also have individual coaching.I think I might thrive in this environment because there isn't any group projects.
Option 2:
Go take a certificate course in the field that I am interested in. This certificate course doesn't have any group projects like the way diploma courses often have, so I might end up thriving in here too.
Anyway, my mom kept saying that the A levels thing is a bad idea. Is it really a bad idea? Which option should I go for? Option 1 or Option 2?
oh dear i have social anxiety too!! i am reeeaaaaallllyyy awkward with people and my schoo life generally ain't too great.
do u know what you want to do? does "interested" implies something you really wanna do in life? if so, go for it!
if not do A levels only waste money to pass time :/ this is just my opinion :)
